If you are creative, this is a business that you can start quickly I wanted to include it as a business idea just in case you have talent waiting to be discovered. Many people have artistic talent but don’t fully understand how to create a successful business with that talent.
What you can do with this business idea is sketch or paint pictures from photographs of people and pets. Your customers will pay a lot of money to have these sketches done as gifts or for themselves. Artists are making money – now more than ever – because of the Internet and the ability to showcase their talents across the world. You may want to think about being a specialist who only draws or paints pets, children, couples, or children, etc. If you are going to specialize, do some research to find out some of the growing markets. For instance, if you were to specialize in pet portraits, you would do so after discovering the fact that, according to an American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, there were 63.4 million US households with pets. That’s a lot of pets! And a lot of portraits! I would say that’s a good niche market to work with. The owner can send you a picture and, as the artist, you can replicate into a sketch or painting. What if you have no artistic talents? Then you can start a referral business where you set up the entire structure of the business and have a group of artists who specialize in specific types of art. Then, you promote and sell the art for one price and pay the artist their share. They get a certain percentage of the profits for the work and you keep a percentage of the profits for creating and marketing the business. The fact is, that there are a lot of starving artists out there who have the talent, but don’t have the business know-how. They don’t know how to find customers, where to advertise and how to make money. How much you can make You can sell each picture for $100 and up. I once read about a woman who was charging a minimum of $5,000 for animal portraits. Crazy, but people love their pets. She could do two portraits a month and have sales of $120,000 (with very little overhead). This is also heavily based on the quality of your marketing and promotions. And as I mentioned, if you can manage the process and have a collection of artists who do the work while you promote the business, you will be able to create great profits. Valuable Skills/Requirements As I mentioned, there is a way to create this business without even being the artist who sells the work. However, if something like this interests you and you think you may really enjoy it, I suggest taking some courses in a local college or continuing education schools to see if you may just have the hidden talent. As with any business, it’s all about marketing. Most artists and art businesses don’t even make ends meet because they don’t have the skills or the knowledge to promote their business. Startup Costs The wonderful thing about being an artist is that the bulk of your income will come from your talent. If you are already an artist, but you're trying to find ways to make money as opposed to living as a "starving artist," you may already have the necessary tools for the creative part. However, the next step is marketing your service business. Rental space in an expensive gallery is no longer a necessity now that we have the Internet at our fingertips. A web site will range in cost from $500 to $2,000. There are plenty of sites available to help you build your own site as part of the web hosting fees. The cost for these services start at $20 with a merchant set-up and got upward from there. Resources American Society of Portrait Artisits (ASOPA)
